borderland

there was a wall,
a wall between them,
it was so transparent
it could have been of glass.

it could not be torn down,
or broken into pieces,
it was a high wall
before a deep crevasse.

it was a barrier,
conceived by expectations,
but built on false hope
through which none could pass.

it was such a wall
that none could knock it down,
or live in peace beside it
and so they went away.

it still stands,
with its scrawled reflections
of past promises
etched upon its broad expanse.
