down autumn roads

blacktop speckled yellow-orange
and there lay rain-plastered leaves
of oak and maple
sticking to the tarry surface
with the tightness of lover's saliva
and when it dries. . .
the leaves will move again
and where they laid
and pressed upon the road,
they lost
the final moisture of life.
