squandered

spent long hours having fun
long hours having none
spent long hours in the sun
in a race that can't be won

saw long years rolling by
long years also flying high
spent long years guessing why
it took so long to say goodbye

lived that brewery day by day
worked the hours come what may
hated when i had to stay
loved it my certain way

worked in heat and worked in sweat
now one knew and don't know yet
it was a time i won't forget
a hand i won but never bet

somehow something broke

breaking bread at midnight
drinking cognac at dawn
champagne for nooners
so how did we go wrong?

it was only you and me
in a crowded cafe
everybody else was gone
they were only in our way

time was only something now
so we lived our lives
but somehow something broke
and the spark no longer thrives
